Local area

The region is dotted with farms and vineyards where small local producers supply the Greater Lisbon area with fruit and vegetables. Portugals history is obvious even in little villages, where the architecture of churches and chapels speak of past grandeur. As a guest it is easy to combine artistic and cultural itineraries with visits to the virtually unspoilt beaches near Ericeira. Exploring inland will bring you into first-hand contact with the land and its charming people.

The Portuguese are easy-going and relaxed, and are a result of a rich mixture of cultures and experiences. They are instilled with a permanent love for the sea and the mild climate, and are always ready to have a drink, share a meal or tell a story.

Local festivals are celebrated with passion and fervour, offering an insight into their unique sense of hospitality. The festivals in honour of countless saints are always a good excuse for music, dancing, barbecues, processions and fireworks, often for days on end and the locals’ enthusiasm is as infectious as it is colourful.

The uniquely romantic feeling of ‘Saudade’, which is expressed in Fado songs, in poet’s mysterious verses and in comprehensible feelings such as longing, sadness, fate and hope; it is a typical Portuguese trait.

Culture enthusiasts can choose from places such as Sintra, Tomar, Alcobaça, and Batalha, which have all been given World Heritage status and feast their eyes on the treasures ranging from the Baroque period to exciting contemporary art. The streets are paved with patterned cobblestones, the narrow lanes are a wonderful place to lose yourself and the fairytale palaces will bewitch your senses.
