In 1809, when Napoleon invaded Portugal, his troops found their way blocked by the greatest range of field fortifications the world had ever seen. The ‘Lines of Torres Vedras’ had been secretly built under British command to protect Lisbon during the Peninsular War.
One of these forts, the Forte do Picoto sits right next to Quinta de Sant’Ana, and is in fact the inspiration for one of our wines.
While we are fascinated by this piece of military history, in this very unique Wine Dinner we wish primarily to introduce you to the French varieties and wine styles that have invaded our Quinta over the last 20 years, and often compliment the indigenous varieties we also champion.
Starting with a Sparkling Blanc de Noir made by the traditional method coined in Champagne, we will warm up the evening in our barrel room accompanied by a selection of hors d’oeuvres and French chansons to amuse your bouches and your oreilles alike.
With all courses and accompanying wines introduced by James Frost, our Wine Dinner in the Great Hall will begin with a farewell to the very last vintage of our beloved Sauvignon Blanc. Our quirky version of a Portuguese White Burgundy will follow, all gunpowder and muscles that would make Wellington proud. Expect two very exclusive launches with the red selection… our first Pinot Noir Reserva (356 bottles made) named after the tiny quarter hectare parcel ‘Vinha do Pinhal’, and our highly sought-after Merlot (556 bottles made) whose accompanying dish guarantees to delight… much like Johnny Depp in the film Chocolat…
Just in case you still need tempting, our final course… of course… is cheese. Some of the best Noble Rot sweet wines are made in France and we are fortunate enough to make an impressive contender here at the Quinta, thanks to our occasionally-infamous, cool and damp, Ericeira-Mafra climate. This wine with cheese is heavenly.
Six wines, six courses, the usual Sant’Ana flair for hosting events (we do so love a good party!) but this time with various vinous and military anecdotes from James, this Wine Dinner Soirée promises to be one for the books.
Our Wine Dinners are quick to sell out, please do not delay to book.
The talented Sant’Ana chefs are putting finishing touches on the menu. Once finalized, we will send final details and information to all ticketholders for the evening.
